Its job is to stop fire and smoke spreading from one area to the next for a set time, so people can get out and fire fighters can work. A building is divided into fire compartments, and every opening in a compartment wall needs protecting.
A fire rated door closes off stairs, corridors, plant rooms and compartment walls. It only works with the right hardware: closer, hinges, lock or panic bar, and seals. We supply fire door accessories as well. For wide openings, a fire rated rolling shutter or a fire rated curtain stays open in daily use and closes when the alarm sounds.
Every hole made for a service is a path for fire. Fire rated sealant fills gaps around pipes and cables. A fire rated collar closes off a plastic pipe as it melts in a fire. A fire rated damper closes an air duct where it passes through a fire wall.
Fire rated gypsum board builds fire-resisting partitions and ceilings. Steel loses strength when it gets very hot, so steel frames are protected with a coating. Intumescent paint swells into an insulating layer in a fire, and keeps a clean painted look. Cementitious fire coating is sprayed on thicker, and is often used where the steel is hidden.
A fire rating (for example 60 or 120 minutes) comes from a fire test of that product in a stated wall or door. When you ask for a quote, tell us the rating and size you need. We confirm the rating and the documents that come with the product in the quotation.
It is set by the building's fire safety design and the wall the door sits in. Stair doors and plant room doors often need a higher rating than a corridor door. Check your approved drawings, or send them to us.
No. A fire rated door is tested as a complete unit: leaf, frame, glass, seals and hardware together. Changing a part, or using an ordinary door, loses the rating.
Intumescent paint is thin and gives a smooth painted finish, so it suits exposed steel. Cementitious coating is thicker and usually costs less for the same protection, so it suits hidden steel. The coating thickness depends on the steel size and the rating.
Yes, on request. Our team can install doors and hardware, seal service openings, and apply coatings. Ask for it with your quote.
