Choosing a CCTV camera
Start with what you need to see. A camera at a shop counter needs a clear view of faces and hands. A camera on a gate needs to read a face or a number plate as people come in. A camera over a car park or a warehouse needs a wide view. Then choose the camera:
- Dome cameras, like the Hikvision CCTV camera, sit on a ceiling indoors and are hard to knock out of position.
- Bullet cameras point clearly at one area and are common outdoors, on walls and gates.
- Night vision uses infrared light to record in the dark. Some cameras also show colour at night when there is some light.
DVR or NVR?
Analog (HD) cameras connect to a DVR with coaxial cable. IP cameras connect to an NVR over a network cable, and can often take power through the same cable. Analog systems usually cost less. How many days of recording?
The recorder's hard disk sets how many days of video you keep. More cameras, higher resolution and recording all the time use more space. Tell us how many days you want to keep, and we size the disk for it.

How many cameras do I need?
Count the entrances, the cash or stock areas, and the corridors or yards you want to watch. Each needs at least one camera. Send us a rough plan, and we suggest the number and type.
Does CCTV work during a power cut?
Only if the cameras and recorder have backup power. A small UPS or an inverter keeps the system recording during load shedding.
