Fire Safety Equipment Your Factory Fire Team Needs

Factories in Bangladesh are required to have trained fire fighting, rescue and first aid teams. Training is the most important part. But a trained team without the right equipment cannot act safely.

Here is the basic equipment a factory fire team needs, and what each item is for.

Personal protective equipment (PPE)

Protects the head from falling objects and heat. Choose a helmet with a face shield and a neck cover.

Fire proof suit

Protects the body from heat and flames. A proximity suit reflects heat and lets the team get closer to a fire for a short time.

Safety gloves

Heat-resistant gloves protect the hands when handling hot objects, hoses and tools.

Gum boots

Protect the feet from water, heat and sharp objects on the floor.

Respirator mask

Helps against smoke for a short time while escaping or working at the edge of a fire. It is not a breathing apparatus. For going into heavy smoke, trained firefighters use breathing apparatus with its own air supply.

Rescue and fire fighting tools

• Fire stretcher: to carry injured people out safely.
• Fire hook and beater: to pull down burning material and beat out small fires.
• Lock cutter: to cut locks and chains that block a door or gate.
• Fire bucket with stand and fire water drum: sand and water ready for small fires.

Where to keep it

Keep the equipment in a fire equipment box on each floor or near the fire team’s station. Label it, keep it unlocked or with a break-glass key, and check it every month. Missing or damaged items should be replaced right away.

Do not forget the basics

How many sets of PPE does a factory need?

At least one full set for each member of the fire team on each shift, plus spares.

Can a respirator mask be used to fight a fire inside a building?

No. It is only for short escape or light smoke. Entering heavy smoke needs breathing apparatus and special training.
