Fire Safety Checklist for Garment Factories in Bangladesh

A practical checklist for RMG and textile factories: exits, fire alarm, extinguishers, water systems, electrical safety, fire team and drills.

Garment and textile factories have a lot of fabric, yarn and cartons, and many workers on each floor. A small fire can spread fast. That is why these factories are checked by Fire Service, DIFE, and buyer programmes like the RMG Sustainability Council (RSC).

Use this checklist to find gaps before the inspector does.

1. Exits and escape routes

  • Enough exits and stairs for the number of workers on each floor.
  • Exit doors that are never locked during working hours and open in the direction of escape.
  • Stairs enclosed with fire-rated doors that close by themselves.
  • Aisles and stairs kept clear of goods, bundles and cartons.
  • Exit signs and emergency lights that work when the power fails.

2. Fire alarm

  • An addressable fire alarm system covering all floors. Read addressable vs conventional.
  • Manual call points near every exit and stair.
  • Sounders and strobes loud enough to be heard over the machines.
  • Heat detectors in boiler, generator and kitchen areas.
  • Battery backup, and regular tests with records.

3. Fire extinguishers

  • The right type in each area: ABC on the floors, CO2 at electrical panels, foam at fuel stores. See extinguisher types.
  • Enough units so nobody walks too far. See how many you need.
  • Monthly checks and yearly service, with tags filled in.

4. Hydrant and sprinklers

  • A hydrant system with hose reels or landing valves on every floor.
  • Sprinklers where the building type needs them. See our sprinkler guide.
  • A pump room with electric, diesel and jockey pumps that start automatically. See our fire pump guide.
  • A full water tank, and valves checked and open.

5. Electrical safety

  • Panels covered, labelled and kept clear.
  • No loose or joined wires, and no overloaded sockets.
  • Proper earthing and correctly sized breakers.
  • Regular thermal scans of main panels, if possible.

6. Separation of high-risk areas

Boiler rooms, generator rooms, chemical stores and fabric stores should be separated from the production floors with fire-rated walls and doors. Openings where pipes and cables pass through walls should be sealed with fire-rated sealant or collars. See passive fire protection.

7. Fire team and drills

  • A trained fire fighting, rescue and first aid team on every shift.
  • Proper PPE for the fire team: helmet, fire suit, gloves, boots. See our fire team equipment guide.
  • Regular fire drills for all workers, with records.
  • A clear evacuation plan and assembly point.

8. Records

Keep the fire licence, drill records, equipment service records, alarm test records and training records in one file. Inspectors and auditors ask for them. Our fire licence guide explains what Fire Service checks.

Common questions

What fire safety equipment is required in a garment factory?

Usually a fire alarm, extinguishers, hydrant and hose reels, emergency lights and exit signs, fire-rated doors on stairs, and often sprinklers. The exact list depends on the building and the inspection.

Can you supply what the inspection found missing?

Yes. Send us the findings list and we will quote for the equipment it calls for.
