Description
A water flow switch detects water moving in a sprinkler pipe and sends a signal to the fire alarm panel. When a sprinkler head opens in a fire, the flow switch tells the panel which zone is flowing, so the alarm sounds and the building knows where to go.
It is fitted in each zone control valve set and on the riser. A built-in delay stops short surges of pressure from causing false alarms.

Installation and care
Fit the switch in a straight run of pipe, with the paddle sized for the pipe, and set the delay to stop false alarms from surges. Test it with the zone test valve during routine maintenance.
Common questions
Why does the flow switch have a delay?
Short surges of pressure can move the paddle without a fire. The delay ignores them, so only a steady flow raises the alarm.
