Description
An ABC dry powder extinguisher is the most versatile portable extinguisher. Its monoammonium phosphate powder puts out fires in paper, wood and fabric (Class A), flammable liquids (Class B) and gas (Class C), which is why it is the standard choice for homes, shops, offices and factory floors.
The powder can damage sensitive electronics and makes a mess indoors, so a CO₂ extinguisher is the better choice right beside computers and electrical panels.
Key features
- Class A, B and C fires
- Monoammonium phosphate powder
- Stored pressure with gauge
- 1, 2, 4, 6 and 9 kg sizes
Applications
- Homes and apartments
- Shops and offices

Choosing the size
Smaller sizes (1 and 2 kg) suit cars, kitchens and homes, where a light extinguisher is easiest to use. The 4 and 6 kg sizes are common on office and factory floors. The 9 kg size gives the longest discharge for warehouses, car parks and larger risks. A larger size is heavier, so think about who will use it. How to use it
Pull the pin, aim the nozzle at the base of the fire, squeeze the handle and sweep from side to side. Keep a safe distance and keep your exit behind you. After use, the powder must be cleaned up, and the extinguisher must be refilled even if only part of it was used.
Installation and care
Hang it on a wall bracket or stand near exits and on escape routes, where people can see it and reach the handle easily. Check the gauge needle every month: it should be in the green. The powder can pack down over time, so have the extinguisher serviced regularly. Our team can install, service and refill ABC extinguishers on request. See Fire Extinguisher Refill and Servicing for a simple schedule.
Common questions
Is an ABC extinguisher safe on electrical fires?
Yes, the powder does not conduct electricity. But the powder can damage computers and machines, so a CO2 extinguisher is better right beside sensitive electronics.
How long does the powder last?
The extinguisher keeps working for years when it is stored and serviced properly. Check the gauge every month and have it serviced regularly.
Which size is best for a home?
A 1 or 2 kg ABC extinguisher is light and easy to handle at home. Keep one on each floor, and a fire blanket in the kitchen.
