FM-200 Fire Suppression for Server Rooms

How FM-200 gas protects server and electrical rooms without water, what the system is made of, and what to check before you buy.

Water and powder put out fires, but they also destroy servers, switchgear and medical equipment. For these rooms, a clean gas system like FM-200 is used. It puts out the fire and leaves nothing behind.

Short answer: FM-200 is a clean gas stored in cylinders. When detectors find a fire, the system warns everyone, waits a short time for people to leave, and then fills the room with gas through nozzles. The fire goes out, and the equipment is not damaged.

Where FM-200 is used

  • Server rooms and data centres.
  • Electrical rooms and switchgear rooms.
  • Control rooms in factories and power plants.
  • Telecom rooms, archives and rooms with costly equipment.

How it works

  1. Detectors in the room find the fire. Usually two detectors must go off before the gas is released, to avoid false discharges.
  2. The alarm sounds and a warning light shows. People leave the room.
  3. After a short delay, the extinguishing control panel releases the gas.
  4. The gas comes out through the discharge nozzles and fills the room quickly. Under the NFPA 2001 standard, the discharge is completed within about 10 seconds.

Parts of the system

  • FM-200 cylinder: holds the gas under pressure.
  • Discharge nozzles: spread the gas evenly in the room.
  • Extinguishing control panel: controls detection, warning and release.
  • Detectors: smoke and heat detectors in the room.
  • Manual release and abort switches: at the door.
  • Warning signs: on the door.

Is FM-200 safe for people?

When the system is designed correctly, the gas level used is safe for people for a short time. Even so, everyone should leave the room when the alarm sounds. A fire also makes smoke and harmful gases.

The room must be sealed

The gas has to stay in the room long enough to keep the fire out. Gaps around doors, cable holes and ducts let it escape. Before handover, the room should be sealed and tested. Fire-rated sealant helps close the gaps.

Also keep a CO2 extinguisher

A CO2 extinguisher at the door lets staff deal with a very small fire before the system needs to discharge.

Common questions

How much FM-200 gas does a room need?

It depends on the room volume, the temperature and the design standard. An engineer calculates it for each room.

Does FM-200 damage computers?

No. It is a clean agent that leaves no residue.

How often should the system be checked?

Check the cylinder pressure and the panel regularly, and get a full service every year.
