Description
A jockey pump is a small, high-pressure pump that keeps a hydrant or sprinkler system full and at pressure. Small leaks, valve seepage and temperature changes slowly lower the pressure; the jockey pump tops it up before the main fire pump would start.
It runs automatically from a pressure switch or control panel, starting when the pressure falls below the set point and stopping once it is restored. Every fire pump room built to NFPA 20 includes one alongside the main pumps.

Installation and care
It is installed beside the main pumps with its own suction and delivery, valves and non-return valve. Its start and stop pressures are set just above those of the main pump. If the jockey pump starts very often, look for a leak in the system.
