Description
An anti-vortex plate is fitted over the suction inlet in a fire water tank. Without it, a fire pump drawing hard from a low tank can create a whirlpool that pulls air into the pump, which cuts its flow and can damage it.
The plate breaks up the vortex so the pump keeps delivering full flow until the tank is nearly empty, which increases the usable volume of water. NFPA 22 and NFPA 20 call for one where a pump draws from a tank.
