Description
A non-return valve, or check valve, lets water flow in one direction and closes by itself if the flow tries to reverse. On a fire pump's delivery it stops the system pressure from spinning the pump backwards and keeps the pipework full when the pump stops.
It also stops water from the fire system flowing back into the town supply or the tank, and separates pumps that run in parallel.

Installation and care
Fit the valve with the flow arrow pointing the right way. On a pump delivery it goes between the pump and the isolating valve. Check during maintenance that it closes properly, because a passing check valve can let the system pressure fall.
Common questions
Where is a non-return valve fitted on a fire pump?
On the pump delivery, so water cannot flow back through the pump when it stops.
What happens if it leaks?
Water flows back, the system loses pressure, and the jockey pump may start often. Repair or replace it.
Can it be fitted vertically?
Yes, with flow upwards, for models suited to vertical installation.
