A good CCTV system lets you see your home, shop or factory from your phone, and gives you clear recordings when something goes wrong. But there are many choices. This guide makes it simple.
Short answer: for a small home or shop, 2MP or 4MP analog cameras with a DVR are enough and cost less. For an office or factory, or if you want the clearest picture, choose IP cameras with an NVR.
Analog (HD) cameras with a DVR
Modern analog cameras (often called HD-TVI or HD-CVI) give a good picture and use coaxial cable. They connect to a DVR, which records the video. They are cheaper and easy to install.

IP cameras with an NVR
IP cameras send video over network cable. They connect to an NVR. With PoE (Power over Ethernet), one cable carries both power and video. IP cameras give a sharper picture and have smarter features, like detecting a person or a vehicle.
Good for: offices, factories, warehouses and larger buildings.

How many megapixels?
- 2MP (1080p): fine for general viewing of rooms and doors.
- 4MP: clearer faces and details. A good choice for most shops and offices.
- 8MP (4K): very clear. For large areas, gates and car number plates.
More megapixels also means more storage, so the hard disk fills faster.
Bullet or dome camera?
Bullet cameras are long and easy to see. They are good outdoors and show people that the area is watched. Dome cameras are small and round. They are good indoors and harder to knock out of position.
How many days of recording?
It depends on the number of cameras, the megapixels, the video settings and the hard disk size. As a rough guide, a 1 TB hard disk can hold around two weeks of recording from four 2MP cameras using H.265 compression. Motion-only recording lasts much longer. Night vision
Most cameras have infrared (IR) night vision and show a black and white picture in the dark. Check the IR range, for example 20 m or 30 m. “Colour night” cameras use a small light or a very sensitive sensor to show colour at night.
Mobile viewing
Hikvision systems use the Hik-Connect app and Dahua systems use the DMSS app. Both let you watch live and play back recordings on your phone. You need an internet connection at the site.
Do not forget
- A UPS, so the cameras keep recording when the power goes off.
- Good cable and proper connectors, so the picture does not break up.
- Cameras placed at entrances, cash counters, stores and car parks first.
- A strong password on the DVR or NVR.
