Not every fire extinguisher works on every fire. The wrong one can fail, and some can even make the fire worse. So before you buy, you need to know what can burn in the room.
Short answer: for most homes, offices and factories in Bangladesh, use ABC dry powder extinguishers on every floor, CO2 extinguishers near electrical panels and computers, and foam extinguishers where fuel or chemicals are stored.
Fires are grouped by what is burning
- Class A: solid things like wood, paper, cloth, fabric and plastic.
- Class B: liquids like petrol, diesel, oil, paint and solvents.
- Class C: gas like LPG and natural gas.
- Class D: burning metals. This is rare and needs a special extinguisher.
- Class F (or K): cooking oil and fat in kitchens.
- Electrical fires: any fire where the power is still on. You need an extinguisher that does not carry electricity.
One room can have more than one type. A generator room has diesel and electricity. A garment floor has fabric, machines and wiring.
ABC dry powder: the all-rounder
ABC powder works on Class A, B and C fires, and it is safe on electrical equipment. That is why it is the most common extinguisher in Bangladesh. It is a good choice for corridors, stairs, warehouses, factory floors, car parks and general office areas.
The downside is the mess. The powder spreads everywhere and can damage computers and machines. In a small room, it also makes it hard to see.

CO2: for electrical equipment
A CO2 extinguisher puts out the fire by pushing away the oxygen. It leaves nothing behind, so it does not damage equipment. Use it near electrical panels, server rooms, control rooms and offices with a lot of computers.
Two safety points. Hold it only by the handle, because the horn gets very cold. And do not use it in a small closed room with people inside, because it lowers the oxygen.
CO2 is not good for burning paper, wood or cloth. The fire can start again after the gas clears.

Foam: for fuel and oil
Foam covers the top of a burning liquid and cuts off the air. It works on Class A and Class B fires. Use it in fuel stores, paint stores, chemical stores and boiler rooms.
Do not use foam on live electrical equipment unless the label clearly says it is safe for that.

Water: only for solid materials
Water works well on paper, wood and cloth, and it is cheap to refill. But never use it on oil, fuel or electrical fires. On oil it spreads the fire, and on electrical equipment it can give a deadly shock.
